The MSc Artificial Intelligence course is delivered through a mixture of technical and professional skills modules, designed to give you practical experience in building AI systems, as well as understanding of the overall AI landscape and the ethical and governance issues pertaining to its use.Ìý

The curriculum offers comprehensive insights into advanced AI theories, tools, and technologies. You will explore sophisticated techniques in areas such as Machine Learning, along with methods for enabling systems to interpret and process both textual and visual information.

The course also delves into designing algorithms to tackle complex problems and methods for structuring and leveraging knowledge within AI systems. Additionally, it emphasises developing the professional skills essential for a career in AI, including the ability to conduct research, evaluate emerging trends, and stay at the forefront of technological advancements.

A strong focus is placed on the responsible and ethical application of AI and data. This includes a dedicated focus on understanding the regulatory, ethical, and organisational considerations necessary for governing AI and data effectively.

The final stage of your studies will be devoted to an individual MSc project which brings together the concepts and skills you have learned to investigate, design and implement a solution to an AI problem.

Learning Methods

You will be taught through a mixture of lectures, tutorials, labs, and external speakers, supported by the University’s virtual learning environment, Moodle,Ìýwhich provides access to a wide range of resources and support materials. For online students, teaching is delivered through Moodle using a combination of recorded lectures, practical exercises, live group discussions, dedicated support sessions, and self-study.Ìý

Independent Study

A significant portion of this courseÌýis underpinned by independent learning, and you will be expected to be responsible for managing your coursework, reading and other learning activities appropriately.

Equipment Requirements

While on-campus students will have access to School facilities for practical work, all students are recommended to have access to their own device (laptop or desktop PC) capable of supporting their studies. This is particularly important for online students, for whom a suitable personal device is essential. An example specification might be:

• RAM – minimum 16GB RAM
• GPU – dedicated GPU, such as from the NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon RX series

Placements

Students may have the option to seek a short placement. However, permission to undertake a placement is at the discretion of the School and is not guaranteed.

For students who undertake a placement the course duration will be extended by the length of the placement.

What is needed for MSc Artificial Intelligence?

• Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent in Mathematics, Statistics, Computing or any other analytical discipline.
• Applicants with a lower degree classification and / or relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.0Ìýoverall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
